How Well Does the 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLC Drive in the Snow?

Compact on the outside but seriously capable underneath, the 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLC is one of the most winter-ready SUVs in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. With available 4MATIC® all-wheel drive, a new hybrid-assist system that adds instant low-end torque, an intelligent traction management system, and a Transparent Hood feature that lets you see the terrain beneath the front bumper, the GLC is engineered to stay composed when the roads turn slick.

Here’s how it performs in the snow, and which 2027 GLC SUV trims give you the most confidence behind the wheel this winter.

What Makes the GLC a Strong Winter Performer

The foundation of the GLC’s winter capability is its available 4MATIC® all-wheel-drive system, which operates continuously rather than waiting for a driver to activate it. Power is distributed to the wheels with the most traction automatically, so the SUV responds to changing road conditions in real time without any input from you.

This is paired with the GLC’s 4-wheel Electronic Traction System (4-ETS), which manages torque at each individual wheel and works alongside the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) to brake a slipping wheel and redirect power to the wheels that still have grip, all within milliseconds.

New for 2027, most GLC trims add a 48-volt Integrated Starter-Generator, an electrified system that pairs with a small lithium-ion battery to deliver up to 23 hp and 148 lb-ft of gas-free electric torque on demand. On snow or ice, that immediate electric assist arrives more smoothly than a traditional engine’s power delivery, helping reduce the abrupt wheel spin that can happen when accelerating from a stop on a slippery surface.

The GLC also includes Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR), which automatically modulates the brakes on steep, snow-covered descents to prevent skidding, and driving mode settings tuned specifically for slippery conditions that adjust throttle response and allow a controlled amount of wheel slip to actually improve traction on packed snow and ice.

Mercedes-Benz put the GLC through extensive validation for exactly this kind of weather, testing prototypes in Arjeplog, Sweden on hill climbs, skid pads, and sheer ice handling courses.

One standout feature for winter and off-road confidence is the GLC’s available OFFROAD dash display with Transparent Hood technology. Using the vehicle’s front-mounted cameras, this system creates a virtual view of the terrain directly beneath the front of the car, projected onto the central display, so you can see hidden snowbanks, ruts, or obstacles that would otherwise be blocked by the hood. It’s especially useful at low speeds, showing the ground beneath the vehicle up to 5 mph and extending the view ahead up to 12 mph, giving you a clearer picture before committing the front wheels to an unplowed driveway or snow-covered trail.

Which 2027 GLC Trims Handle the Best in Snow, and Why

The 2027 GLC SUV lineup still includes four trims at the same starting prices as last year, and their winter capability continues to vary significantly depending on drivetrain. Here’s how each one performs when the roads turn white:

GLC 300 SUV: Skip This One for Extended Winter Driving

The base GLC 300 SUV starts at $52,400* and, like the outgoing model, remains rear-wheel drive only, now paired with a new Integrated Starter-Generator that adds up to 23 hp and 148 lb-ft of electric-assist torque. That extra low-end torque helps smooth out throttle response, but it doesn’t change the fundamental traction disadvantage of a RWD-only SUV. Without all-wheel drive to distribute power across all four wheels, this trim remains a less adept match for snow and ice, and we’d still steer buyers in snowy climates toward the 4MATIC® version instead.

GLC 300 4MATIC® SUV: The Smart Everyday Winter Choice, Now With More Instant Torque

Starting at $54,400*, the GLC 300 4MATIC® SUV carries the same core turbocharged engine as the base model, now enhanced by the same Integrated Starter-Generator, adding up to 23 hp and 148 lb-ft of electric torque on top of full-time 4MATIC® all-wheel drive. Real-world testing backs this trim up: snow tests have found the GLC 300 4MATIC® handles deep, uneven snow without hesitation, with no spinning or sliding, even on its factory all-season tires. With its added hybrid-assist torque now smoothing out low-speed acceleration even further, this remains the trim that delivers the best balance of value and winter capability for most drivers.

GLC 350e 4MATIC® SUV: Instant Torque for Slippery Starts

The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) GLC 350e 4MATIC® SUV starts at $62,700* and produces a combined 313 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. Its electric motor delivers torque instantly and smoothly, which is a real asset when accelerating from a stop on snow or ice, since power arrives gradually rather than in an abrupt surge that could break traction. Combined with standard 4MATIC® all-wheel drive, the 350e continues to offer strong low-speed control for stop-and-go winter commuting.

AMG® GLC 53 4MATIC®+ SUV: The Most Advanced Winter Handling

At the top of the lineup, the AMG® GLC 53 4MATIC®+ SUV starts at $69,900* and produces 443 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque from its AMG®-enhanced turbo-hybrid inline-six engine, with 10-second bursts of up to 472 lb-ft available on demand.

This trim continues to use fully variable AMG® Performance 4MATIC® all-wheel drive, and Mercedes-Benz’s latest details on the system confirm it can send up to 100 percent of torque to the rear wheels, or route torque from the rear-mounted electric motor toward the front axle as conditions demand. An electromechanical coupling between the front and rear axles adjusts based on driving mode, acceleration, and available grip, giving this trim an especially wide range of torque distribution for optimizing traction whether the road is dry, wet, or covered in snow.

It also adds standard rear-axle steering, which turns the rear wheels opposite the front wheels at low speeds for tighter, more controlled maneuvering into snowy parking spots and driveways, and parallel to the front wheels at higher speeds for added stability. AMG® RIDE CONTROL adaptive suspension and an upgraded braking system round out a trim that’s engineered to stay composed even when you’re driving with more power on a compromised surface.

GLC 400 4MATIC® Electric SUV: All-Electric Traction With No Torque Delay

Rounding out the 2027 lineup is the all-electric GLC 400 4MATIC® Electric SUV, or GLC 400e, Mercedes-Benz’s first fully electric take on the GLC. Rather than a traditional mechanical AWD system, it uses dual permanently excited synchronous motors producing a combined 483 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque, with independent control over the front and rear axles.

That independent motor control is a genuine advantage in snow. The rear motor drives the vehicle by default, while the front motor engages automatically through a Disconnect Unit (DCU) whenever sensors detect a need for extra traction, whether that’s from wheel slip, acceleration demand, or road conditions. Because each motor is controlled separately and reacts electronically rather than mechanically, torque reaches the wheels with essentially no delay, allowing smooth, wheel-spin-free takeoffs even when starting from a stop on packed snow or ice.

A descriptive description of the image

Mercedes-Benz validated this system specifically for winter conditions during extensive testing in Arjeplog, Sweden, where engineers fine-tuned the GLC Electric’s ESP®, ABS, and standard rear-axle steering for precise handling on snow-covered inclines and icy surfaces. That rear-axle steering adds a 4.5-degree adjustment at low speeds, improving cornering stability on slippery roads and making tighter, more controlled maneuvers into snowy driveways or parking spots easier than with a conventional AWD SUV.

One consideration for winter driving: like all EVs, the GLC 400 4MATIC® Electric will see some reduction in its estimated range in freezing temperatures, since battery efficiency and cabin heating both draw more power in the cold. Preconditioning the battery and cabin while still plugged in can help offset some of that seasonal range loss before you head out.

Winter Driving Tips for Your GLC

Even the smartest all-wheel-drive system benefits from the right habits behind the wheel. Keep these in mind once the snow starts falling:

  • Swap to dedicated winter tires once temperatures consistently drop, since all-season tires lose grip in freezing conditions regardless of drivetrain.
  • Use the GLC’s slippery or off-road driving mode on snow-covered roads to soften throttle response and reduce wheel spin.
  • Take advantage of the Transparent Hood display when navigating unplowed driveways or unfamiliar snow-covered terrain, so hidden obstacles don’t catch you off guard.
  • Increase your following distance on snow and ice, since stopping distances lengthen even with 4MATIC® or 4MATIC® engaged.
